Which DNS Servers should I use?

Filed under: DNS, Hosting

If you plan to transfer your domain to our registrar, then please use the following DNS servers when hosting with us:

ns1.axdns.net - 98.124.192.1

ns2.axdns.net - 98.124.197.1

ns3.axdns.net - 98.124.193.1

ns4.axdns.net - 69.64.145.225

If you are an Axcess Enterprise client and have dedicated or colocation equipment at our Sunnyside, Washington Datacenter then please use these DNS Servers.

How to increase maximum upload size on WordPress

Filed under: Configuration, server, FAQ, wordpress

By default Axcess uses the standard 2MB file upload on all Linux PHP servers. However, for those clients who need to increase this size there are a number of ways you can do this. For the purposes of this KB article we are providing the steps for those clients utilizing the WordPress Content Management System.

1. In some cases you may increase the size of your upload by modifying the Theme Functions File:

You may add the following code to your theme's functions file:

@ini_set( 'upload_max_size' , '64M' );
@ini_set( 'post_max_size', '64M');
@ini_set( 'max_execution_time', '300' );

This will increase the maximum upload size to 64MB.

2. If you are unable to modify the theme's function file you can also create a PHP.INI file in the WordPress directory with the following code:

upload_max_filesize = 64M
post_max_size = 64M
max_execution_time = 300

This will have the same effect as adding the options to the theme's function file.

If you require additional assistance, please submit a ticket to our support team.

Virtual Server vs. Virtual Hosting

Filed under: e-servers, virtual servers, virtual hosting, servers

Many people ask us what the difference is between a Virtual Server and a Virtual Hosting solution. Our answer...Night and Day!

Nearly 99% of Hosting Services use an outdated technology known as Virtual Hosting to put your Web site online. These services rent you a finite amount of space on their system and maintain tight restrictions on the file types, amount of data transferred, number of POP3 email accounts, SMTP email and your use of additional services such as RealAudio and RealVideo. The hardware and the software responsible for your online success are controlled by a site administrator who is the only person who can modify the way your Web site is setup and configured.

An Axcess VSX Server™ incorporates the idea of multiplexing a single UNIX Internet server system into multiple virtual server systems. That means that a number of virtual server environments can function independently on a single physical system. Axcess gives you full and unlimited access to your Virtual Server through a web based control panel. Security is never a problem because each VSX Server™ is segregated within its own area on each machine.

Just as if it were running on a dedicated system, each virtual server receives its own set of virtual Internet services that you can customize to fit your specific needs. And, just like a standalone system, each virtual server receives its own unique domain name and IP address, and has its own individual log files, custom CGI scripts, and more!

With an Axcess VSX Server™ you do not have to worry about the server hardware costs or maintenance, but you do have complete control over how your server functions - including your Web server, FTP services, POP mail, SMTP mail, autoresponders, online databases, and more!

Your Server is yours to configure the way you like it. With only minor restrictions, such as no adult oriented or pornographic material and no proprietary software download offers (warez sites), etc., you have a free hand to control your server and your business.

Also, with an Axcess VSX Server™, what you order is what you get. There are almost no additional monthly fees. Your Axcess VSX Server™ comes complete. The only additional charges are for adding more storage space to your site or additional bandwidth if needed.

If you are new to Web Server technologies, do not worry. Your Axcess VSX Server™ comes ready-to-use and pre-configured for standard Web serving applications. You just build your Web site (with Microsoft Expression Web, Macromedia Dreamweaver or any other HTML editor) and you are online! But if you are an expert who wants even more control, you can SSH into your server to change your own file permissions, add custom CGIs and programs, set up cron jobs, add virtual hosts, edit configuration files, include additional MIME types, analyze log files, manage email accounts, and finally, be free of restrictive virtual hosting.

But if you are an expert who wants even more control, you can SSH into your server to change your own file permissions, add custom CGIs and programs, set up cron jobs, add virtual hosts, edit configuration files, include additional MIME types, analyze log files, manage email accounts, and finally, be free of restrictive virtual hosting.

e-Server™ Technology Overview

Filed under: e-server, vsx server, virtualization, Xen, server

e-Server™ Servers are designed for the customer looking for more control than what is offered with a shared web hosting account. Virtualization allows us to effectively offer multiple dedicated server environments within one physical machine.

With Xen virtualization, a thin software layer known as the Xen hypervisor is inserted between the server's hardware and the operating system. This provides an abstraction layer that allows each physical server to run one or more "virtual servers", effectively decoupling the operating system and its applications from the underlying physical server.

The Xen hypervisor is a unique open source technology, developed collaboratively by the Xen community and engineers at over 20 of the most innovative data center solution vendors, including AMD, Cisco, Dell, HP, IBM, Intel, Mellanox, Network Appliance, Novell, Red Hat, SGI, Sun, Unisys, Veritas, Voltaire, and Citrix. Xen is licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL2).

The Xen hypervisor is also exceptionally lean-- less than 150,000 lines of code. That translates to extremely low overhead and near-native performance for guests. Xen re-uses existing device drivers (both closed and open source) from Linux, making device management easy. Moreover Xen is robust to device driver failure and protects both guests and the hypervisor from faulty or malicious drivers.

Perform the following steps to export the certificate that you installed on your Web server.

Step 1: Create an MMC Snap-in for Managing Certificates in Microsoft IIS 5.0

Go to Start > Run.

Type in "mmc".

Click OK.

From the menu bar, select Console > Add/Remove Snap-in.

Click Add.

Select "Certificates" from the list of snap-ins.

Click Add.

Select Computer account.

Click Next.

Select Local computer (the computer this console is running on)

Click Finish.

Click Close on the snap-in list window.

Click OK on the Add/Remove Snap-in window.

Step 2: Export the Certificate (with Private Key)

In the left pane of the MMC, click on Certificates.

From the right pane, click on Personal.

Click on Certificates.

Right-click on the certificate.

Select All Tasks > Export.

When the "Certificate Export Wizard" begins, click Next.

On the "Export Private Key page", click Yes, export the private key, and then click Next.

On the "Export File Format" page, select Include all certificates in the certification path if possible and deselect the Require strong encryption check box.

Click Next.

Choose a password to protect the PFX file. You will need to enter the same password twice to ensure that the password is typed correctly.

Click Next.

Choose the file name you want to save this as. Do not include an extension in your file name; the wizard will automatically add the PFX extension for you.

Click Next, and then read the summary. Pay special attention to where the file is being saved to.

If you are sure the information is correct, choose Finish.

You now have a PFX file containing you server certificate and its corresponding Private Key. You may want to back up this to a floppy disk . This file can be saved in a normal server backup.

Step 3: Import the backup file to Microsoft IIS 6.0

Right-click on the Web site in question and select Properties.

Go to the Directory Security tab > Secure Communications > Server Certificate

The "Web Server Certificate Wizard" will start up.

Click on Next.

Select Import a certificate from a .pfx file and click on Next.

Enter the path and file name of the file containing both the Certificate and Private Key file (.pfx file) or use the Browse button to browse to the location of the .pfx file.

Select Mark certificate as exportable. This allows you to mark the imported Certificate as exportable. Marking a Certificate as exportable allows the Certificate to be exported to a file for backup.

Click on Next.

Enter a password for the Certificate you want to import.

Click on Next.

Assign the SSL port for the Web site. (Note: 443 is the default SSL port)

Click on Next.

The next page will display the summary of the imported Certificate. Click on Next.

You will receive a message confirming the successful completion of the import.

Click on Finish.

Many mail servers, even those with an external IP address, route mail through a firewall or proxy server. From the perspective of Axcess' servers, the firewall or proxy IP address is connecting to Axcess, not the other mail server. If you are unsure whether or not you are sending through a firewall or proxy server, the following test will show the path of any mail that leaves your system.

Automatic Test Process

Send an email to test@netaxcess.com. You will receive a response from noreply@axcess.us. The response will contain the IP address that connects to Axcess Internet.

Manual Process

Send an email to an account outside your own domain.
View the full header of the email as received by the external account. You will see a series of lines beginning with the word Received: For example:

Received: from 123.123.123.123 (EHLO mail2.sammy.com) (123.123.123.123) by
server.outsideEmailServer.com with SMTP: Sat, 23 Aug 2003 12:43:16 -0700
Received: (from send@localhost) by server2.sammy.com (8.8.5/8.8.5) id MAA14276: Sat, 23 Aug 2003
12:43:19 -0700

In this example 123.123.123.123 is the IP address of the server that connected to the external mail server, even though the mail originated elsewhere. Should you find out that you have been connecting through a firewall or proxy server, please run the Reverse DNS Tool and Manual Telnet tests again using the IP address of the firewall or proxy connecting to Axcess' mail servers.
